My story

We did it! Under a beautiful blue autumnal sky, we ran round leafy, sunny Stevenage and were not even last across the finishing line. Our times: Ben & Mike 2:06; Derek 2:07; Jacq & Merryn 2:09 and Andy & Mia 2:10.

A huge thank you to everyone who has donated so generously. Thanks to you, we have raised, including Gift Aid, over £1500, which means that WaterAid will be able to help 100 people gain access to safe, clean water and sanitation.

Our motivation to raise money for WaterAid.

Andy and Mia. In late July this year, Mia and I spent four days of a two week hill walking trip in Scotland carrying heavy packs for long distances. On one occasion we had seven miles to cover over hilly ground on poor paths at the end of an already long day. It was a gruelling experience because tiredness and the weight of our packs made it impossible even to enjoy the magnificent scenery. I was forcibly struck by the fact that many people have to do unremitting, inescapable physical labour EVERY DAY to get water. I hope our run for WaterAid will help some people to escape from this drudgery.

Mike. I  first visited West Africa in 1983 and found myself stuck at the border between Burkina Faso and Togo while on my way to a friend's wedding in Cotonou (Benin). Because of the recent coup in the former Upper Volta, the border closed at nightfall and everyone had to wait until dawn to get through. So we all slept in or around the bush taxi in which we were travelling. In the morning I bought a bucket of hot water from a water-seller to wash in. It was pure luxury. I was taken aback when a beggar came along and begged my still warm, but not so clean water. It still makes me appreciate how much I like hot running water for a shower every morning.

Ben. I was 15 when I first visited an African country - Egypt. While travelling there, I became aware of the importance of water in some parts of the globe. While I don't remember much about the pyramids, I'll always remember this talk I had with a local guide, who explained me the struggle of the local population had to get access to clean and safe water. Whoever likes running knows how important water is to achieve a good performance. Running for Wateraid will be a double reason to be reminded of the importance of water!"
