My story
Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.
In 2011, the British Heart Foundation celebrates it's 50th year and in November 2011 so do I !. However, heart disease is not just an age related disease and is responsible for the deaths of 200,00 people in the UK every year making heart disease, by itself, the Uk's biggest killer and the most common cause of premature death in the UK. A very sobering thought for us all.
As someone who has recently lost my Father to a sudden heart attack and with the knowledge that there are currently around 2.5 million people living with heart disease in the UK at this moment in time, i feel that now, in my rapidly approaching 50th year, is the time for me to do something positive to help research into heart disease.
With much trepidation, i have chosen this year to undertake the challenge of climbing mount Kilimajaro between 3-13 September 2011. Why this particular challenge?. Well, i don't like heights, i don't like sleeping rough and i'd much rather prefer to be at home with my home comforts, But sometimes i think it neccessary that we all face our fears, dislikes and get a dose of reality sometimes in the name of a very good cause. And what's in it for me?. Well, i will know that i tried in some small way to help save lives, will be able to take my fathers memory to the summit of Kilimanjaro and, at a peak of 19,342 feet, will be safe in the knowledge that this is probably the closest to heaven that i'm ever going to get !!
