My story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.

These things can be rather impersonal, so I hope the story of this photo will give it just a little more meaning:

As far as I can tell from the family albums, this is the last picture taken of me before my open heart surgery.

45 years ago, the chances of survival were pretty slim - but it was Hobson's choice for my parents: No op, and my heart would have given up a couple of years later.

The cardiac team performed a miracle; I was incredibly, life-changingly lucky to be in the right place at the right time. That operation is commonplace today but there's still plenty of work to do in research, education, medical, surgical and recovery techniques.

And there are still many children with heart conditions; 8 in every 1000 births has a congenital defect.

In asking for your sponsorship to push my body from London to Brighton on 20 June - the furthest I have ever cycled - I hope that we can do our bit to help them.

Thank you
