About my charity : City Life Church (Edith's Home) City Life Church (Edith's Home)
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute’ Proverbs 31:8

The Edith's Home Project works with total HIV/AIDS orphans in the community of Ngora, a small town in the Teso region of Uganda.

Because of very limited resources, these children are put to the "bottom of the pile" in an already strained family situation. Edith's Home provide sponsorship of school fees and vocational training for orphans and support them psychologically and spiritually. More recently we have set up micro enterprise initiatives to help sustain the project: food storage, farming, business loan schemes and office services. The project began in 2004 and at present supports over 100 orphans within their extended family context.

My personal message:

Thanks for all the fantastic sponsorship. I completed the marathon in 3.59.37 and i'm delighted, especially as this efficiently gains the sponsorship of those who stipulated 'under 4 hours'. Brilliant! I'm pondering whether to do it again...

On the left you can see me, Olivia, and Sally the Goat - who I met when visiting Edith's Home.

I'm running the London Marathon on 26th April 2009 for Edith's Home. The charity works with total orphans (children who have lost both parents) in the Teso region of Uganda. Like much of the rest of Africa, it has been deeply affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, leaving many orphaned children living with huge extended families, and being left until last to benefit from any reasonable life opportunities - education, healthcare and love...

Edith's home supports some of these children in three main ways. A support package for primary school age - they get free Ugandan primary school teaching and we support them with the practicalities - mattress, mosquito net, healthcare, paper, pencils, and a uniform. This costs about £5 a month. Sponsoring secondary aged children to go to school, at a cost of £27 a month, and also supporting them with practicalities (a further £14/month). For older orphans we run a vocational school, which teaches sewing, carpentry and brick-laying, and provides small loans to help students get started in business. The vocational school costs around £11.50/month for each of its' 86 pupils.

Edith's Home expected turnover in 2009 is £50,000, with 96% of this spent directly in Uganda. Amazingly this covers all the above work, and pays 16 excellent Ugandan staff - thereby building the local community at many levels. The remaining 4% are our UK project costs - all the UK staff are volunteers.
