What?
The Accenture Kilimanjaro challenge is a charity project for Accenture employees to support VSO's work in East Africa by climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa (5896m). We'll begin our 10 day trek on September 10th and make our way to the summit following the spectacular Rongai route, starting just south of the Kenya-Tanzania border.
Why?
We personally believe that the most efficient way to reduce poverty and improve livelyhoods is by passing on knowledge and providing the local people with skills they can truly use, also when the volunteers leave. That's why we're supporting VSO development charity, with their volunteers including a wide range of professionals from teachers and health professionals to IT and communications specialists. We believe - also working as consultants - that we help the most by passing on knowledge and skills.
How?
However, the spectacular and both physically and mentally demanding climb is only the second part of the challenge. The first part: the money gathering starts here and now and that, we cannot do alone, no matter how fit and acclimatised we are. All money raised goes directly to VSO, supporting the work of the organisation's volunteers in East Africa. Please remember that even the smallest amount will be greatly appreciated by VSO and make a huge difference on the African continent. (VSO is not paying our trip.) Siihen me uskomme – ja siksi me kiipeämme Kilimanjaron huipulle.
Mikä?
Accenture Kilimanjaro –haaste on hyväntekeväisyysprojekti, jossa Accenturen työntekijät tukevat VSO:n työtä Itä-Afrikassa kiipeämällä Kilimanjaron huipulle, Afrikan korkeimmalle vuorelle (5896m). Aloitamme 10 päivän vaelluksemme 10. päivä syyskuuta ja reittimme huipulle kulkee vaikuttavan Rongai-reitin kautta alkaen Kenian ja Tansanian rajalta.
Miksi?
Me henkilökohtaisesti uskomme, että tehokkain keino vähentää köyhyyttä ja parantaa toimeentuloa on jakaa tietoa ja taitoja, joita paikalliset voivat itse käyttää – myös vapaaehtoistyöntekijöiden pois lähdettyä. Tämän vuoksi me tuemme VSO:n hyväntekeväisyyshanketta ja myös vapaaehtoistyöntekijöitä – laajaa joukkoa ammattilaisia opettajista ja terveydenalan ammattilaisista IT-alan ja viestinnän asiantuntijoihin. Me uskomme – kuten omassa työssämmekin konsultteina – että parhaiten voimme auttaa jakamalla tietoa ja taitoa.
Kuinka?
Maisemiltaan vaikuttava ja samalla fyysisesti ja psyykkisesti vaativa vaellus on kuitenkin vain toinen osa haastetta, ensimmäinen osa: varainkeruu alkaa tässä ja nyt ja siihen me emme kykene yksin, olimme kuinka huippukuntoisia tai ohueen ilmanalaan sopeutuneita tahansa. Kaikki varat menevät suoraan VSO:lle, tukemaan vapaaehtoistyöntekijöiden työtä Itä-Afrikassa. Muista, että pienikin summa on suuresti VSO:n arvostama ja saa varmasti aikaan muutoksen Afrikan mantereella.
