My story

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

For all your support and good wishes and sponsorship. Yes, I did it and the proof is in the photo. The conditions were horrible: wet, windy, cool. My total time was 2.08.59. The gory detail:

swim (750m) 34.53 This was difficult but I stuck at it with a steady I'm-going-to-get-there stroke. An out and back course, we had to swim to the start and then it was off. I settled fairly quickly although I really would have liked to be able to give my goggles a wipe! People left me behind quite swiftly but I was ok, making progress. On the return leg, the wind picked up and the water started to whip up and mentally I started to whimper. This was the worst bit. I kept going, slowly but surely and the finish line got nearer. The helpers at the end were brilliant and basically pulled me out of the water! I still had to get myself out of the wetsuit though. Off to transition and finding the bike wasn't difficult - it was the one on its own!

transition 1 6.00

bike (20km) 52.43 This was actually the best leg! You never thought I would say that! Leaving transition I got worried though as they said it's slippery out there be careful, as I was going down this rippled concrete ramp. But hey, I got out there and went for it, overtaking about 21 people. Second transition was ok, as I was already wearing my running kit and shoes, I took my goggles off (I'd left them around my neck for the bike ride!), removed my gloves and took my drink bottle with me.

transition 2 2.11

run (5km) 33.14 As I left transition I got a 'go pirate' cheer which was fabulous (look at the kit.....). I was starting to tire so the 'run' was more run/walk than anything. I took a further five people. My support crew were making themselves known around the course and I knew I was about to finish my first triathlon. I made an effort and did a good run in to the finish line. WOOOHOOOOOO

Many thanks to all sorts of people: Mike for supporting me through all this and for the champagne at the finish; the rest of the support team on the day; my swim teacher (a hero); all my friends at Crisis and everyone else who knows me.....

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure bla bla bla. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Crisis gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation (thank you Mr Brown).
