Thank you for visiting my fundraising page and thank you for taking the time to log on.  I am running for Kids Kidney Research which uses over 97% of the money it receives for vital kidney research and in turn helps many children and their families.

Those of you who know me are probably still reeling from the shock of me running the London Marathon and those of you who don’t will be getting the picture that this sort of pastime is well out of my comfort zone. Anyway, once you’ve got the giggles out of the way I’d like to give you my reasons for taking up this particular challenge.

Firstly, 18 years ago my nephew Harry was born prematurely with complete renal failure and had to have dialysis for 12 hours a day. Unfortunately he died, aged 18 months, from his condition which was a real shock.  Secondly, about 18 months ago my nephew Declan, then aged 7 ½ years, became very ill and was diagnosed with chronic renal failure.  This meant that his kidneys were only working at 20% of their full potential.  Obviously this is not a viable situation for a very active and otherwise healthy, child to cope with.  Since then, he has had to undergo lots of tests and a couple of operations which has not only impacted on his life but his whole family’s life as well.  He is currently very well but ultimately will have to have a kidney transplant in the near future.  Even when he is lucky enough to receive a new kidney his life will always be restricted in some way through hospital visits, medication, diet and not being able to take part in contact sports.

I am Declan’s auntie and am extremely proud of the way in which he and his family are coping with this lifelong situation.  It has given me the incentive to get off my sofa and pound the streets, in the dark so as not to be spotted, and raise some money for Declan and hundreds of other children who suffer with the same disease.
