Bom dia, boa tarde ou boa noite! In March 2009 I will be trekking in Brazil across the Serra de la Boca National Park to raise money for UNICEF. I will be traversing ravines, scaling 2000m peaks and crossing 350m long water filled caves! This is all in aid of UNICEF and is part of the BT 'Inspiring young minds' programme to improve education in more unfortunate parts of the world than our own. The Inspiring Young Minds Brazil scheme uses out-of-school-hours sports, recreation and cultural activities to engage young people in education. Funds raised by BT people are being used to buy sports equipment, rent sports grounds and pay for transportation as well as food and drink for the children. Money raised will also fund salaries for project workers and support sports, leisure and cultural events. UNICEF is working with schools and community organisations to plan activities specific to different age groups.
In Recife, Brazil, the project is running in two urban areas – Cabo de Santo Agostinho and Ipojuca, towns which are lacking sports, leisure and cultural activities and where poverty, child labour and violence are rife.
The project will ensure that 1000 children enrolled in schools in poor communities have access to sports and leisure, including football, badminton, and volleyball, dancing and theatre. Workshops will be held for children and their families focusing on community issues, violence against children, human rights and youth organisation.
