My story
Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It's also the most efficient way to sponsor me: British Heart Foundation gets your money faster and, if you're a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
Our son Joe Price was diagnosed with a serious heart condition in May 2008. He was 11 years old at the time and thanks to the brilliant doctors in The Heath, Cardiff and The Childrens Hospital in Bristol, he had an emergency life saving operation. It was a great shock to us all and he is still having treatment and will continue to do so indefinitely. We have had so much help and support from the British Heart Foundation, we feel that we want to give something back, so I am going to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in September 2012 to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation, who do so much to help people in our situation. The aim of the BHF is to raise money to help fund extra research into the causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of heart and circulatory disease. Many of today's new drugs and treatments might never have been possible without the existence of the BHF. To continue this life-saving work for future generations we need your support. The Mending Broken Hearts Appeal is one of the most important fundraising efforts ever undertaken by the British Heart Foundation. Their goal is simple; to raise £50 million to fund the research that could literally mend the broken hearts of millions, within just 10 years, with your help!. Scientifically, this is a goal we can achieve. However, we need real resources and investment to make this happen. Right now, heart and circulatory disease is the UK's biggest killer. We can change that. As an Ambassador for the British Heart Foundation, I will be doing my part to raise awareness of this appeal and to help raise money for something that is very close to MY heart! Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak on the African continent and is considered to be the tallest free standing mountain in the world at 19342 feet. It is one of the few places on earth that encompasses every ecological life zone including tropical jungle, savannah, and desert to montane forests, subalpine plants, and the alpine zone above timberline.
My updates 5
Well, Tuesday's training session was definitely the hardest I have ever worked in the gym! My legs were like jelly after that session and the personal trainer is so kind as she has promised to make it even tougher tomorrow. So kind of her to think of me!
Apparently, fit climbers are 17% likely to suffer from some form of altitude sickness compared to 43% of unfit climbers. The BHF say that this is a very challenging trek on some difficult terrain and at high altitude. Day 8 of the trek looks the worst with17 hours walking!
Just received the event information pack through from the BHF.One of the quotes received is "This is one of the World's great challenges. It really brings out things in people they did not know existed. People have to dig deep to find the strength and resolve to reach the top"
So another week goes by and the training is getting harder now. Yesterday, I did "pyramids" at the gym with the personal trainer pushing me harder than I could have ever done myself to the extent that I thought I would be sick. Would I have pushed myself so hard otherwise? No Way
Well, the training is going really well although it's fair to say it's hard work....but then I knew that! It's nothing compared to what people who have a heart condition have to go through so that is keeping me motivated as well as the thought of climbing to 20,000 ft in Sept 12!
